'Live with Regis & Kathie Lee' Interview
REGIS PHILBIN: From a Designing Woman to a homemaking maven in her new series Style & Substance, here's the lovely Jean Smart. KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Oh, the woman is fabulous! Boy, Jean you look great. REGIS: Formidable looking woman. KATHIE LEE: Oh yes, don't mess with her. And she's smart too. JEAN SMART: I'll send you roses. I'll send you roses after the show, sure. REGIS: Oh, thank you very much! JEAN: You know, Darryl Hammond and I just exchanged autographs, I was so excited to meet him -- except he wrote mine to Pamela. I'm serious! I think it was a joke, but I don't know who he had in mind. KATHIE LEE: Maybe you remind him of Pamela Lee. JEAN: Mmmm! REGIS: We were on Style & Substance this week. JEAN: You were, we were so excited. KATHIE LEE: I know it. I smell an Emmy. It was good. REGIS: That was a great scene you had. JEAN: You know what? I fell asleep in my son's bed reading him a book. REGIS: And you missed it. JEAN: And I woke up at midnight, and I missed it. So I have to get the tape. I'm so sorry. REGIS: Well it was very funny. She did a terrific job in our kitchen -- JEAN: And Jean Stapleton. REGIS: -- with Jean Stapleton. JEAN: Isn't she a doll? REGIS: Was that a take off on something? JEAN: Well supposedly something like that happened once between Julia Childs and Martha Stewart. That's what I heard. REGIS: Well it was very funny. KATHIE LEE: And yet you know you're not saying you are a Martha Stewart parady. JEAN: No, I don't watch her show, I'm not trying to do an impression of her. But I think the fact that she's so popular, and what she does for a living has become a household name, I think someone thought that it was a fun idea to take as a character and just sort of go from there. REGIS: Absolutely. So on Style & Substance you have your own television show all about style. It's almost like the Martha Stewart show. And in this particular scene, your producer is played by Nancy McKeon. And you know how sometime you don't get along with your producer -- JEAN: She's new. She just arrived at the office. KATHIE LEE: Learning the ropes. REGIS: -- and you're invading her privacy, you're looking through her purse. KATHIE LEE: You've got to know what you're dealing with in life. REGIS: Let's take a look. KATHIE LEE: You have quite the distinctive way of delivering a line, don't you think? JEAN: Ha! It's true. I am wearing the same suit (in the clip). KATHIE LEE: I wasn't going to say anything. JEAN: I couldn't believe it. I was sitting in the makeup chair looking and thought "Oh my god." KATHIE LEE: It's a lovely suit. JEAN: I went to the costumer and said "Give me some stuff for the New York trip," and she threw a bunch of stuff in a garment bag, and I thought, "Oh, I'll wear that one." REGIS: And of all the shows, of all the clips! It came out to be this one. |
